Horse leg injury advice?
I was on a trail ride with my mare and we went up a large hill. After we reached the top and were about ready to start heading home, she turned up lame. (we were only doing a free walk) She is a competing 8 year old oldenburg who is in top physical condition. I immidiatly got off to acces the situation. She over reaches but this was not her over reaching. I checked her hoof (she has full pads on her front legs) and everything was normal with her hoof. But she was still resting her left front foot. I ran my hand down her tendongs, and it was swollen, and warm. I had to walk her home as the trail was inaccessabel by vehicle. She was limping the whole way home and uppon arrival to the barn, her tack was taken off and a halter put on. I washed her leg with cold water until my mom arrived with an ice pack. I had the ice pack on but the swelling did not subside, and the ice had melted. She will walk but she prefers not to. I also have her on stall rest, bute, and am icing that leg 2-3 times a day. she only had 1 mg. of bute but that didn't even put a dent in her pain. I will be calling the vet tomorrow morning. It happened 5 hours ago. Is their anything else I should do for the duration before we call the vet? do we need to call the vet? will they tell us anything different? I believe she has a sprain to her digital flexor tendon about 2 cm. above her fetlock joint.
