How can I strengthen my knee muscles/tendons?

I'm running half marathons and having issues with my knees, I just can't find the right pair of trainers so sticking to neutral ones for the moment. I have no problems running uphill but when I run down hill I feel like I'm going to blow my knee out at any time. There is a fair bit of pain but only downhill. If the 13 miles were flat I would be fine!! I'm doing double step knee ups on the stairs( liftting my bodyweight up two stairs with just one leg) is there anything else I can do to strengthen my knees?

How to tell if my cut tendons have healed?

i tore some of the tendons in my wrist, i had surgery and had to wear a splint for 6 weeks, i got the splint removed last week but im finding it hard to bend my wrist, it bends so far but becomes very tight across the scar and gives me pain down my arm. does this mean the tendons have not healed?

you have to use your arms too. 3 quarters of running is arm movement. well, i dont run for fun (thats weird) so i dont know if people who do stop if something hurts or if they get tired, but in track, even in practice, i just run through the pain (inside and outside knee injuries, shin splints possibly, inside and outside ankle injuries, big toe injuries and achilles injuries all on both of my legs) and i dont stop if i get tired. plus, you can build up from running. you dont have to run 5 miles on the 1st day, but no offense, but thats what you get for smoking. it screws up your body, but congrats for being able to succesfully quit. and use your toes. and i dont run long distances (100 through half a mile, long,, triple and high jumps, and 100 and 400 hurdles), but in xc, i heard that breathing through your nose and out your mouth helps, but i think its a load of sh*t. just remember to take in a lot of oxygen and water.

no dont get a boot it can weaken all your muscles and also loose your range of motion which is bad. also then you might get dependent on the boot. your mom is right. also they are around 400 dollars so not worth getting one without a doctor prescribing one. i would stick with PT and also wrap it in an ace wrap then put the brace over it or get a better brace. rest it ice it and stop walking so much.

Okay, so i just went on a cruise trip for a week and i met this boy. He is really sweet, slightly geeky, funny, and literally the guy version of me. We are the exact same. What to do for my foot?

The doctor says that there is nothing wrong with my foot but before he said that he had said that i had sprained it. When physical therapy(PT) wasn't working i went back to the same doctor and he sent me for an MRI. After he saw my MRI this is when he said nothing was wrong. But if there was nothing wrong then why am i still in pain? On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being worse pain imaginable my foot feels like a 4.5-5. Also on my PT papers they put Achilles tendon strain. The area where my foot hurts is the Achilles tendon area and the area where a high ankle sprain would be. I've been doing R.I.C.E since when my foot first started hurting and it's not helping at all. When i first injured it i was on crutches for about 3 weeks and was doing PT for 2 of these 3 weeks. My injury happened 2.5 months ago. It hurts when i point my foot and when i bring my foot towards me. One please don't say i'm acting like a baby cause the 1-10 thing is just currently sometimes it hurts a lot worse. Secondly going back on crutches isn't an option. And three the only 2 choices my mom is really letting me have is going to another doctor or keep doing PT which isn't helping. Also if you know could you please tell me what could be wrong with my foot and how to make it better fast because i'm a level 5 gymnast and i'm trying to make it to states while a level 6 so... What is there a squishy lump on the outside of my ankle?

I am a normal, healthy 24-year-old female. Yesterday I noticed I have a squishy bump on the bottom of my ankle.THREE days ago, I stepped on my son's toy and kindda threw myself forward to the ground because it hurt so much. It just hurt the bottom of my foot, not my ankle. I didn't roll my ankle either. Yesterday, a day after, it started to hurt a bit when I walked. That is why I was examining my ankle. This lump is squisy, and when I push it side to side it feels almost like there is fluid in there. It's hard to tell. I can feel the tendons in there too. They feel stringy. I'm not sure if it's just swelling or what. As far as I know, I didn't hurt my ankle 3 days ago in my "accident", but it happened so fast that maybe I did. I also must say that 2 years ago I rolled the same ankle, and suffered an extremely bad and painful sprain. It took about 6 months for it to completely heal. I am wondering if the lump is from that sprain and I never noticed it until just now when my ankle is hurting. Since I noticed it, my ankle has been wrapped with a brace and I am taking Motrin. Ther is no improvement. My real concern is if the squishy lump will heal itself or if I need to go to the doctor to have something done about it? Walking Boot for Achilles tendon?

Would i get a walking boot for an Achilles tendon strain? I went to the doctor(sports medicine doctor) about my ankle and he said that i sprained it but i later found out that i had an Achilles tendon strain from my physical therapist when he did a physical examination. I did physical therapy (PT) for 6 weeks and it didn't help and the doctor said that i should be exercising it so i went on a trip where in total i walked 7.5 miles over 4 days. Now my Achilles REALLY hurts. I can barely walk and it even hurts while i'm sitting down. On ehow.com it said that if i had moderate pain i should use crutches for at least 72 hours... So what should i do for it because the r.i.c.e method isn't helping neither is PT.

I have taken 1000 mg of cipro, that's 2 doses of 500 mg. I can hardly walk from the pain in my right leg. I am afraid that the tendon is going to snap. Major FML situation: what should I do?

Why does my elbow pop while lifting weights?

It is a little skinny tiny bone thats like 1 cm and when i lift weights or do push ups i feel it pop.It is in the inner side of my elbow. Also it is not just when i lift weights. If i bend my elbow back fully it will pop ... its as if if a little bone just pops up. It does not cause pain just discomfort. Is it normal for an Achilles tendon to crack?

I've tried to do some research, but none of it has really answered this. Every once in a while, maybe once or twice a month, my rick ankle will get this almighty pain, and in order for it to go away, I have to move it around so it can crack. (The pain is in the very back of my ankle. I believe it's my achilles tendon.) It hurts to move it, and it even hurts more when it cracks. I'll have to do it three or four times for it to go back to normal. When it starts to hurt, it feels like a stabbing pain and I'll have to grab onto something in order to keep myself up. Could this be because of my weight? I am overweight, so I'm possibly thinking that could be one of the reasons. It's been going on for over a year. I'm not sure if something is wrong with it, or it's just a regular thing.

BLOW TO LOWER BACK PAIN WHEN MOVING?

i have recently took a hit to my lower left hand side of my back (scaffolding tube dropped on it ) i then stood up as i was bending over to walk it off took two steps and then dropped to the floor ever since i can barely walk as some movements really hurt and want to make my leg give way underneath me with the pain could it be serious or just a bruised tendon any light would be gratefull PS ANY EXCERSISE I CAN TAKE OR PAIN KILLER TO HELP WITH PAIN ?

Am I running too much if I run 9 miles a day?

as a runner myself i would say in my personal opinion that u prolly started off with to much. u need to work urself up. start small and go bigger. it can also make u not be able to preform as well. a close friend of mine in high school was use to running 5-9 a day, and then added another 10-15 more miles on top of that because he started training with a college friend of ours and he over worked his self and hit his peak to early and did terrible in the following season. and it ended up doing something to his legs and back so he didnt get to run the last half of the season. and the pain is ur body telling u to take a break. this pain is differenet than the pain when u first start running. when u first start thats the lactic acid. its something new to ur body. this is ur body telling u to slow down and let it recover. id recommend dropping down to somewhere between 4-6 at the most for a good 2-3 months. and slowly work urself up to more miles. most runners who run marathons run what ur running and then once a week run a single 18-20 mile run. but they have spend a lot of time working up to that. take it slow, and ull get there. but run 5 days a week and take the weekend off or just 2 days of the week. so ur body can repair itself and rest some. good luck

What to do for my foot?

The doctor says that there is nothing wrong with my foot but before he said that he had said that i had sprained it. When physical therapy(PT) wasn't working i went back to the same doctor and he sent me for an MRI. After he saw my MRI this is when he said nothing was wrong. But if there was nothing wrong then why am i still in pain? On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being worse pain imaginable my foot feels like a 4.5-5. Also on my PT papers they put Achilles tendon strain. The area where my foot hurts is the Achilles tendon area and the area where a high ankle sprain would be. I've been doing R.I.C.E since when my foot first started hurting and it's not helping at all. When i first injured it i was on crutches for about 3 weeks and was doing PT for 2 of these 3 weeks. My injury happened 2.5 months ago. It hurts when i point my foot and when i bring my foot towards me. One please don't say i'm acting like a baby cause the 1-10 thing is just currently sometimes it hurts a lot worse. Secondly going back on crutches isn't an option. And three the only 2 choices my mom is really letting me have is going to another doctor or keep doing PT which isn't helping. Also if you know could you please tell me what could be wrong with my foot and how to make it better fast because i'm a level 5 gymnast and i'm trying to make it to states while a level 6 so... Thanx

What could be wrong with my knee?

I had knee surgery they did a lateral release 2 years ago and took out part of the broken off cartilage the knee pain went away for a while but recently something cracked\popped and now when I stand there is a lot of pain when the bone meets the bone. It's pain combined with strong pressure but it feels like there is nothing taking the impact. The pain is for the most part at the bottom of the patella aligned with the patellar tendon. When I put full extended swift on it it feels as if the back will give out or something is to tight what could this be

Walking Boot for Achilles tendon?

From your wording I'm sure I'm much older than you but I have been in an "e" boot for 12 months out of the last 23 months. I have done the R.I.C.E. thing and pt neither of which helped me either. I think the next step I will take is accupuncture. My doctor just keeps telling me it takes time, but never how much time. I really don't see any improvement to this point, I still have swelling and severe pain. It feels like I have a rock taped to the bottom of my heel and it also feels like the skin over the back of my heel has been peeled away and I'm putting a shoe over an open sore. I have had x-ray and MRI and the doctor tells me it is nothing more than Achilles Tendonitis. I really don't have an answer for you but I do understand the pain and the frustration. And I will tell you that the "e" boot has helped me to get around better, but it's tireing and can cause some of it's own issues, namely muscle cramps and if you don't have the same height on the other foot it will also cause back pain and your other foot will hurt because you are stepping down on it so hard from being off balance. I hope you find an answer and get better soon.

Actually i like eating Fried chicken....but these days i thin the prices of Fried chicken at the mamak store is becoming unbelievably expensive.Worst still,if these mamak has a NASI KANDAR to their names....they seem to be able to get away with it.Do you know KFC a Multinational Franchise that we Malaysians are familiar with,charges only RM 6.++ for two pieces of Fried Chicken?And we are talking about Air conditioned comfort,served by proffesional staff and a proper place to wash your hands,with proper soap.tha effectively brings the price of each of chicken to RM 3.00.If you work it out,when you buy the set,the Fried Chicken,which is the basis of the entire meal,works out to only RM 2.50++?? Ankle problem?.................?

Have you tried taping your ankles with the tape that is used by professional athletes? Taping them and then putting a brace over the tape is what you my need. My I also recommend that you go and see a sports medicine doctor that specializes in this sort of thing. there are certain exercises that might be helpful to strengthen your tendons and ligaments that he/she can give you. I have worked with one of the state of Texas' leading authorities in sports medicine. He literally wrote the book on practice and procedure in the sports medicine area. His name is Dr S. Brent Brotzman. In the mean time you may want to use the tape and braces even if you feel they are not helping. They probably are and you just don't know it yet. Also take some aleve or ibuprofen before each race or athletic event.This will help with any swelling that may occur.

A couple of months ago my left thumb knuckle (the one closest to the nail) started hurting (deep in the joint)?

the pain increased and progressed down the thumb to the first knuckle. (again, a very deep in the center of the joint kind of pain). Now I can no longer bend the thumb on it's own. Try as I might, I cannot bend the digit. It is still flexible but will not bend on it's own. I can bend it with another finger but it seems like the tendon just quit working. The joint cracks when I bend it which is something new. I'm a guitar playing drummer with the musical saw as my fallback instrument. Playing since age 8 and now I'm 56. I'm bald headed, I'm white and a tad put out by this malady. WTF is going on with my thumb? Anybody care to take a stab at this question? Thank you.

Still swollen sprained ankles ?

I badly sprained both ankles at gymnastics two weeks ago and at the time I was in agony and couldn't walk but now I'm walking and I have much more movement in both ankles with very limited pain and I've regained my balance on each ankle and all in all I'm healing well but around the bone on the outside of each ankle is still swollen but isn't tender around the swelling.I've had xrays and I haven't broken or fractures either ankle ao we can rule that out.the minute I injured myself my ankles were iced and I iced them plenty for the first while after my injury and after I went walking I would ice them again and lately I've been using ice and then heat packs and i'm using diclac an anti inflammatory cream for ligaments and tendons.I didn't tear any ligaments but I sprained strong ligaments and that they contracted and that they need to be stretches out again so I'm stretching them every day and I'm doing very well now but they're still swollen.what do I do ?why is it like this ?

What is wrong with my left arm?

I've had rigorous color guard practice every day this week. Ballet, flag twirling, and stretching exercises have taken their toll on me. Surprisingly, my muscles are no longer sore. My left arm, however, is in so much pain that I can't even lift it. My right arm is perfectly fine, which doesn't make sense, because I'm ambidextrous and use both arms equally. I think the pain is concentrated in my shoulder and upper arm. I can't tell if it's the muscle, tendon, or joint that is the problem. What is wrong, and how can I help it heal more quickly?

My horse was shoes two weeks ago Saturday a week ago tomorrow we took her to the vets do to limping they them pulled her shoes and that's what the problem was she had a sore up in her hoof the vet said so we have been soaking it twice a day and wrapping it and it seems to be more swelled today. She is a tb who came off the track a few months ago they said she had a chip on her knee which is the same one she is limping on now but there's no heat in her knee and the xray didn't show a big chip could it be her tendons and that's why they stopped running her? I was ran over by a car a few months ago. Well, they ran over my leg/ankle and when I went to the hospital they told me that I sprung my ankle and told me to stay off of it for awhile. I didn't listen and started walking on it two days later even though it felt like I was pulling my achilles tendon apart. The day I was ran over you could feel my achilles tendon move when I touched it and the skin would burn just from a easy touch. Will someone help me it's quite painful and I need advice?

Well I dance and cheer and my freshman year I was dancing and while doing a Triple turn I did something and I messed up my foot. I had to preform the next day so I wrapped it up iced it and elevated it and called it good. I walked the pain off and a week latter it was gone. But ever sense then if I step funny in the slightest way it hurts for a few days again. But it only hurts to put pressure on it and then make the walking movement or all the time when I'm dancing and cheering. The pain is by my ankle on the side facing outwards more towards the back in that soft place where you don't feel any bone or tendon. I have a little blue brace thing that I picked up from the drug store that gives it some support so I can dance and cheer. My mom keeps wanting me to go to the doctor but I am afraid to go to the doctor because what if they tell me I need surgery and I cant dance or cheer for months? That would kill me those things are my passion. There's nothing a little brace and some advil and pain tolerance wont do right? Help has this happened to anyone else? If so what did you do.

Help with Partial Shoulder Dislocation.?

I think I might have damaged my shoulders when I was younger, I think it was a skateboarding accident where I fell and might have dislocated my shoulders because the back of my shoulders, the area where the back tendon behind the armpit was bruised and it hurt alot. I don't remember if both shoulders were bruised but now I get reoccuring dislocations, ones that don't hurt all that much and I can put back in myself but it really annoys me when I'm playing sports. The dislocation seems to be if I accidently hyper extend my arm too far back and up. What are ways I could fix this? Weight training, resistance training? I really wouldn't like to do a surgery...

If i'm correct it should be your cruciate ligament.Long story short its just plain old wear and tear.Your knee cap covers the two cruciate ligaments beneath your knee and all that it takes to tear or snap them is for example keeping your foot in the same spot and turning your knee.Just awkward positions can ruin your cruciate.Go to a doctor to get it checked out because if the ligament has snapped you will need wire implanted to replace the ligament and you will probably not be able to do serious running ever again.

Im 17 years old 6'2" & would like to grow taller. I just wanted to know if there were any thing i could do to help me grow more. I've looked at all these height supplements like peakheight & these stretches that supposedly make you taller. I've even looked int HGH(as a last resort of course) for more growth. I know sleep diet & excercise are the most important factors but i need that little extra step to really get me up there. Lump under my skin...please help!?

About 4 inches below my knee and 4 inches above my ankle there is a lump under my skin. It's slightly noticeable when I stand up, not noticeable at all if I lay down or sit down, but if I move my leg close to my body (kind of like fetal position) it is quite noticeable. There is no redness. It doesn't hurt. When I put my finger over the bump that sticks out about a centimeter or two, I feel a sort of squishing. I wonder if it may be a tendon or something that is injured? I'm really scared because I don't play sports, so it can't be from sports related activity. Also, I'm a 17-year-old female, if that helps. How do i know if i pulled or ripped my tendons or not?

I ran in my ballet shoes for about 10 minutes a day last week for about 5 days because I didn't know it would hurt me. Ballet shoes have very little support for the feet and so not surprisingly, my ankles began to ache and they hurt from time to time. Then the place near my little toe began to hurt too on both of my feet. It only hurts sometimes, and some days it's worse in the morning but by evening it doesn't hurt anymore. Possible stress fracture? confused?

Horse leg injury advice?

I also have her on stall rest, bute, and am icing that leg 2-3 times a day. she only had 1 mg. of bute but that didn't even put a dent in her pain. I will be calling the vet tomorrow morning. It happened 5 hours ago. Is their anything else I should do for the duration before we call the vet? do we need to call the vet? will they tell us anything different? Training for boot camp?

I was riding my bike and my foot slipped and the peddle slammed into the back of my ankle. My Achilles hurts when I walk but I can walk. I can move my foot fine but feel pain. Could I have partly slit my tendon? Like half way or something?

My left side of my neck is swollen?

If feels like there is something there that isnt supposed to be there. When i feel both sides of my neck i can tell that the left side is bigger. Its not painful but it is very uncomfortable. Sometimes its so unbearable that i cant do anything. It has been going on for 2 months. I quit smoking weed because that made it way worse. It almost feels like the muscles and tendons in my neck are raising up. Hard to swallow sometimes. It gets worse at night. Everything else about me is fine though except i have been getting headaches. Its not a tumor is it?

My guess is that you either partially rptured (tore) it or you strained it if you can link the pain to a spacific event.If you ave felt pain there before it may be fom tendonitis in your achilles or tenosynoviti which is basically the same thing but the inflamation is in the tendon sheath not the endon itself. you may also have a short gastroc muscle (its one of the calf muscles) and that is loeading to the tendon soreness... if pain persists with ice and a generic anti inflammitorys (ibuprofen, aleve, ect) and rest (no strong aerobic activity... running, jumping) biking is a good ay to work out without stressing the tendon but if you do all that and it still hurts g to an orthopeic dr, podiatrist, or sports med dr
